One of the most popular trails on Kauai, the Kalalau Trail in the Napali Coast State Wilderness Park is closed due to public health and safety reasons. The trail has been closed from Kee to Honopu and is expected to remain closed until at least Sept. 19.
A contagious virus spread among dozens of backpackers on the trail. At least 37 people fell ill. It's believed to be norovirus, known to cause vomiting, fever, cramps and diarrhea.
"All comfort stations along the trail are being cleaned and disinfected," the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources said in a news release. "Haena State Park and Kee Beach will remain open with enhanced cleaning and disinfection of the comfort station there."
Aside from backpackers, day hikers will not be able to hike the first 2 miles to Hanakapiai Beach during the closure. The trail will be monitored by law enforcement to prevent anyone from accessing the trail.
