Japan Airlines (JAL) has ordered 21 Airbus A350-900 widebodies and 10 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, seeking to grow international capacity 40% by 2030.
The Oneworld Alliance member has also ordered 11 of Airbus' largest narrowbody, the A321neo.
Meanwhile, Korean Air ordered 27 of Airbus' largest A350 variant, the A350-1000, plus six A350-900s.
JAL will deploy 20 of the 21 A350-900s on international routes, with the first delivery slated for 2027. Dreamliner deliveries are also expected to begin in 2027.
JAL has several airline subsidiaries, including low-cost carrier Zipair, which serves the U.S. The company said that the primary focus of its international expansion through the remainder of the decade will be North America, India and other parts of Asia.
The A321neo will be new to JAL's fleet. The carrier expects to deploy those aircraft domestically beginning with deliveries from 2028.
Korean Air said its Airbus order will refresh the fleet as it gradually retires older aircraft. The A350s are the first to be ordered by Korean Air and will augment or replace widebody fleets of Airbus A330s, Airbus A380s, Boeing Dreamliners, Boeing 747s and Boeing 777s.
Korean Air, a SkyTeam alliance member, cited Seoul-New York as a potential route for its A350. It currently serves that city pair twice daily with 747s.
